I made these babies myself
All of these creatures are freeform crocheted (unless otherwise noted), there is no pattern and each one is unique!

SPRING - 2024
By this point I'd been experiencing quite a bit of hand and wrist pain while working. I mostly tried to push through, rest when I could and sleep in a compression glove. Crocheting and knitting had become such an integral point to my mental wellbeing and art practise I was reluctant to stop or slow at all. I applied and got into a local residency for these fibre works when I'd been rejected for multiple times in the past for my illustrative work. While I was very excited I knew I'd have to prioritize my hand a wrist health if I was going to be able to make anything decent in this opportunity. As a result these little guys came out a bit uninspired and weren't received super well. When I was still learning I made a lot of these bugs from Deprecat's patterns and sometimes folks even asked for custom colour schemes from me! This round I decided to pre-make a few (in my signature random yarn colour style) to bring to a market. I often struggle to price my creations and I believe maybe I had these ones priced a little too high for the occasion. It's hard, especially when these little guys bodies come together so quick and their legs take SO long and are quite painful to work on. I want to charge fairly for my work but no one has any money right now, it's hard to justify buying a little guy in this economy!
The Og brothers were made specifically for The Black Sheep Collective and their clown themed event. The market is pretty exclusive so getting in was an ego boost for sure. These guys were fairly well received but didn't make people lose their minds like I hoped they would. They are a pretty easy, mindless make but are a little painful and time consuming to produce. I'd be interested in maybe making an XL version some day but for now I'm happy to leave this design exclusive for that one market.

FALL - 2023
At this point I began to flesh out my little catchphrases so that they were similar to what you might see on the tag of a beanie baby. I experimented with making myself use of a more cohesive yarn colour scheme as seen on Rebecca and Bosbo to an extent. I couldn't really stick to it in the end, I just hated how predictable the colour changes got and it didn't provide me enough motivation to push through the boring parts of creation.
SPRING - 2023
Emboldened by how well my last market went I was able to produce these two the very next season! At this point I became interested in drafting a kind of "lore" for these creatures since a few market goers had seen my original post and were looking for my creatures by name. These two in particular I dubbed "bioyokai" as in biology meets yōkai, the Japanese catchall term for spirits and monsters. This is also when I started to implement little tag lines for each one. The taglines stuck but when I had people repeat the lore names back to me I got rather embarrassed and have since dropped the idea. The inspiration behind these two come from Trevor Roberts' Mystery Flesh Pit National Park and the creations that may be made by grandmas in the area trying to recreate a stuffed version of a child's favourite park inhabitant.

WINTER - 2023
The very beginning! I went through a "mysterious red glove" and "full flash" product photo phase during this time. I suppose I was trying to be mysterious. Sometimes I think it helped to show scale by including my hands but looking back I wish I'd taken a few without the hands for cleaner transparent images.
I'd made crochet toys in the past, mostly based off of free patterns, but this batch was my very first endeavor into my own creations. These babies were created during a fairly dark period of my life - we just got priced out of our rental place and moved in with my partner's family friends. They were very sweet and generous to take us and our dog in but we lived in their basement for the winter before moving upstairs. During that winter I distracted myself from all the noise upstairs by pouring myself into making these guys. I released this batch on February 14th (my birthday) and a few were immediately spoken for but most sold at my inaugural market with The Lavender Club and found their forever homes!
I developed my distinctive random colour style at this point - I was just trying to reuse balls of yarn from a failed granny square blanket. I caked my own striped yarn, mostly at random, and I found that working with this kind of yarn gave me a great motivation to just "get to the next colour" so I could crochet a bit longer.

The Lost Ones
These keychains never really took off. I think they were really held back by the choice to make the colours random and on this scale they just look weird. Plus I couldn't keep them consistently sized. While I thought the plastic chain and clasp would add appeal the size of them clashed with the crochet. It was somehow too big and too small.
Tia's Tiger
I wanted to push myself and make something cool based off a friend's illustration style and translate it into 3d. Go check out more of Tia's work Here!>
Stitch Bitch Modeling Balaclavas
I tried to venture into wearables. I really only work with acrylic yarn and so these were pretty unpleasant to wear. They mostly were traded away. I don't think I'll bother with wearable crochet again in this way.

This stunning model is Stitch Bitch. A Styrofoam head I painted with my old """brand""" colours. I brought her to one tabling event but she's not terribly durable or easy to set up so she mostly stays home. |
